Time to Mold a New Intern!

We are welcoming a new Summer Marketing Intern, Erin! Erin will be a senior at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the fall.  She is majoring in Psychology with an Industrial/Organizational concentration and minoring in English.  She loves to travel and just got back from studying abroad in Stockholm, Sweden for the semester.  Erin is originally from La GranErin intern.jpgge, IL.

In her free time, Erin loves to read and sing.  She has been in the Women's Glee Club at the University of Illinois since her freshman year and her a cappella group, Girls Next Door, since her sophomore year.

Here is what Erin had to say about her internship experience this summer:

Throughout the summer, I am looking forward to seeing the day-to-day operations around Davies Molding and partaking in numerous projects to gain insight into how the business runs.  Interning at Davies is a great opportunity, for I will be able to work on a broad range of projects, which will allow me to gain real-world experience.  There are so many talented employees throughout the company, and they are all very willing to take the time to explain how their jobs work as well as offer advice.  As this is my first internship, I am excited to be at Davies, where I will be working closely with different departments; hopefully, this will give me a better idea of what I want to do after graduation.

Meet Our Engineering Intern

Posted by Jenny DuPrey, Marketing Manager at Davies Molding

Jun 5, 2017 10:00:00 AM

It's that time once again for another engineering intern to join our team for the summer months. This year, we welcome Joe to the team!

Joe will be entering his Junior year at Iowa State University in the fall.  His major is Mechanical Engineering with a Minor in Sales Engineering.  Joe is originally from La Grange, IL.

Joe currently plays rugby at Iowa State and is the captain of the team. When he is not in class or playing rugby, Joe can be found lounging at home with a book or playing golf or softball with his friends.

We enjoy showing the interns the ropes at Davies and hope they gain valuable hands on experience while they are here. The interns also look to learn from us. Joe hopes to perfect the craft of computer design this summer while working on projects using Solidworks software. Beyond enhancing his computer abilities, Joe would like to understand efficiencies and downfalls of a plant and production. He's looking forward (and is already enjoying) the next three months!

The Escape Room Challenge

Posted by Jenny DuPrey, Marketing Manager at Davies Molding

May 26, 2017 9:00:00 AM

We've all participated in the standard team building activities at work. The ladies at Davies Molding decided to take part in an escape room as a team building activity. None of us had done an escape room before, so we weren't sure what to expect.

An escape room is a game where you work together to solve various puzzles using clues and hints you're provided. The goal is to escape within the time limit provided. Each escape room has a story line that you learn about when you first enter the room.

In the escape room we participated in, we were all doctors in a laboratory. We had one hour to dismantle the "bomb" in the room and escape. We quickly realized that we needed to break into smaller groups to work on the various puzzles. Communication and organization were key!

Unfortunately, we were unable to escape in the hour time limit. We did have fun working together and learned that this team building event was very similar to work related situations. We needed all team members to work on various tasks and communicate what they found out to the group.

If you're looking for a great team building event, we highly recommend an escape room. We had fun, but more importantly, learned how to work better as a team.

What is a Davies Molding Hockey Puck?

Posted by Jenny DuPrey, Marketing Manager at Davies Molding

Sep 27, 2016 11:41:36 AM

We've been molding plastic knobs, handles, cases, covers and custom parts for over 80 years! You may have heard us use the term hockey puck when we talk about compression molding. When we use the term hockey puck, we're not referring to the kind the Chicago Blackhawks play with. What is a Davies Molding hockey puck?

In compression molding, the phenolic material comes in a granule form. We need to alter that form so it can be put into the press and the part can be formed. We take the granule material and make hockey pucks- preforms. Preforms can also be called tablets or pills. They come in different shapes and sizes depending on the size of the part we're molding.

How do we make preforms?

  • Preform sizes are selected to match similarly to the diameter of the cavity and the final parts. Preforms are slightly larger/heavier than the final part to ensure flashing and filling out of the whole cavity.
  • Powder granules are poured into the hopper of the preform machines.
  • Powder fills in the open space of the die and then a punch comes in and compresses the powder into a hard tablet/pill/hockey puck. The pressure from the compression of the powder into the die by the punch is enough to form the shape and hardness of the preform.
  • Ejector pins eject the preform into a bin. The preform is then ready to be molded.

I Know What Davies Did This Summer

Posted by Jenny DuPrey, Marketing Manager at Davies Molding

Sep 21, 2016 3:54:46 PM

It's time for us to say goodbye to summer and hello to fall. Looking back at the Summer of 2016, we had some exciting events we did at Davies Molding.

In June, we participated in National Forklift Safety Awareness Day. We educated our employees on forklift safety for both the operators and pedestrians. We passed out informational sheets from OSHA and showed a short video.

To show appreciation to our hard-working employees, we had a BBQ in June. The customer service team helped plan and coordinate it. We couldn't ask for better food or weather that day.

We can't forget to mention the ice cream truck that came to our parking lot one hot day July. All of our employees were able to go out to the truck and pick out a tasty treat. That was definitely a summer event everyone enjoyed- even our sales reps that were visiting!

With July being such a hot month, we had a Heat Safety Awareness day. We passed out sheets that gave tips for staying cool in the hot weather and told employees what signs they need to watch for heat stress. The bottles of Gatorade we handed out cooled everyone off.

It's sad to say goodbye to summer, but we're looking forward to the fall activities that will be coming up. Stay tuned to read more about our Manufacturing Day Open House, our 2nd Annual Chili Cook Off and more!

What is Daka-ware?

Posted by Jenny DuPrey, Marketing Manager at Davies Molding

Aug 24, 2016 3:19:08 PM

You may have seen posts on our social media accounts or website that reference Daka-ware.  Most likely, you haven't heard the term before and are wondering where it originated from and what it means. We would like to give you a brief Davies Molding history lesson to explain Daka-ware.

As you probably already know, Davies Molding has been around for a long time. We've been designing and manufacturing insert-molded knobs, handles, cases and custom components since 1933. We have over 80 years of thermoplastic and thermoset molding experience! When we were molding products in the 1960's, we used Daka-ware as a trade name.

Daka-ware referred to our line of compression molded phenolic knobs, handles and ashtrays. Yes, you read that correctly, ashtrays- they were quite popular at that time. Daka-ware, phenolic parts, can withstand much higher temperatures than ABS or PVC plastics. We still have tools that have the Daka-ware name on them, so chances are, you will still come across the Daka-ware name when you see a Davies knob.
